Feeling overwhelmed with the endless options for study and career paths? If you find yourself wondering what to do when you don’t know what to study, it may be a small comfort to hear you’re not alone.

With the constant pressure to make the “right” choice and the uncertainty of the future, it can be overwhelming for many young people to figure out what to study. This can lead to indecision, stress and anxiety as you try to navigate the seemingly endless possibilities and make a decision about your future.

By taking the time to reflect on your interests, strengths and motivations, and seeking advice from others, you can begin to narrow down your choices and move forward with confidence.

Practical steps for what to do when you don’t know what to study

Here are some steps you can take to figure out what to study, even when you don’t know where to start.

Take some time to reflect on your interests and passions. What are the things that you love doing, that you could see yourself doing for hours on end? These interests and passions can be a good starting point for figuring out what to study.

Consider your strengths and weaknesses. What are you naturally good at, and what do you struggle with? Your strengths and weaknesses can help guide you towards a field of study that plays to your strengths and allows you to overcome your weaknesses.

Think about the things that excite and motivate you. What are the topics and subjects that get you fired up and eager to learn more? These can be a good indication of what to study, as they can help you stay motivated and engaged in your studies.

Research different fields of study and careers. Take some time to learn about the different options that are available to you, and think about how they align with your interests, strengths, and motivations. This can help you narrow down your choices and zero in on a specific field of study.

Talk to people who are already working in the fields that interest you. Reach out to friends, family members, or mentors who are working in fields that you’re considering, and ask them about their experiences. They can provide valuable insights and advice that can help you make a more informed decision.

Don’t be afraid to try something new. It’s okay if you’re not 100% sure of what to study at first. You can always switch fields or try something different later on. The most important thing is to start somewhere, and be open to exploring and learning as you go.

What to do when you don’t know what to study: Take care of your mental health

It’s important to remember that there is no one “right” answer when it comes to choosing a field of study or a career path. What is right for one person may not be right for another, and what works for you now may not work for you in the future. Don’t let pressure from others dictate your decisions – trust yourself and follow your own interests and passions.

It’s also important to take care of your mental health during this process. Choosing a field of study and a career path can be stressful, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, don’t be afraid to reach out for support. Talk to friends, family members, or a counsellor about your concerns, and take time for self-care to relax and recharge. By prioritising your mental health, you can make better decisions and move forward with confidence.

In conclusion, it’s normal to feel unsure of what to study. This is a time to think about you, where your strengths lie, how you want to develop, and what success means for you personally.

Wondering what to do when you don’t know what to study? Taking a gap year and volunteering is a really valuable way to learn more about yourself while contributing to something meaningful on an adventure.
