VOLUNTEER IN CAMBODIA

BRAND NEW DESTINATION

GVI VOLUNTEER PROJECTS IN CAMBODIA

Experience the Kingdom of Cambodia with its captivating cultural history and iconic temples and monuments. The capital city of Phnom Penh is a hive of activity, where ancient architecture abuts cosmopolitan coffee shops and riverside residences.  Further out from the cities you can enjoy the stunning natural landscapes, filled with lush greenery, glistening rice paddies and waving sugar palms.

Local non-governmental organisations in Cambodia have also made massive strides during the past two decades in uplifting their communities. In 2017, we were contacted by a number of these organisations who focus on sustainable development to ask if we would be able to provide the kind of support they need to make their objectives a reality.

By joining GVI you can volunteer in Cambodia and take an active role in improving the educational and community initiatives in the quaint town of Kampong Cham. We have a variety of programs available where participants can take part in:

  • volunteering with children from the community of Phnom Penh, on our social development and teaching programs;
  • conducting women's empowerment workshops, and giving women and young girls access to education and informing them of their rights;
  • healthcare and wellbeing demonstrations, such as how to prevent common health issues, improve personal hygiene and menstrual health education.

We offer a range of volunteering opportunities in Cambodia where we focus on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, #3, Good Health And Wellbeing, #4, Quality Education, #5, Gender Equality, #6, Clean Water And Sanitation, #8, Decent Work And Economic Growth, #10, Reduced Inequalities and #12, Responsible Consumption & Production as our main project aims.

So, if you’ve always dreamt of visiting Angkor Wat and exploring Cambodia, why not consider also making an impact while you’re there? No matter where you are at in your academic or professional journey, if you are trying to find out how to volunteer in Cambodia, simply submit an application form requesting to join one of our projects and we will be in touch shortly.

ABOUT CAMBODIA

Get lost in the otherworldly splendor of Angkor Wat, experience the Cambodian countryside and fully immerse yourself in local cultural practices by joining a GVI volunteer program in Cambodia. Learn about Theravada Buddhism by working on education programs with Buddhists monks, or the traditions of the small Islamic Cham community by conducting preventative healthcare or women’s empowerment workshops in the Cham community.

Hire a bicycle to cycle along the banks of the magnificent Mekong river and practice the art of getting lost in the massive otherworldly splendor of Cambodia’s medieval temples. Take a river boat into the Tonle Sap Biosphere reserve where you could encounter undocumented butterfly species and discover the sweet scent of the rumduol, Cambodia’s national flower, a magnolia native to the region. Greet the fishermen and women of the lake’s floating villages the Cambodian way, with the Sampeah, a traditional way of showing respect and reverence.

WHERE DOES GVI WORK IN CAMBODIA

Our community development project is based in Krong Kampong Cham, a tranquil countryside town two hours by highway or speedboat from Cambodia’s royal capital of Phnom Penh.

In Kampong Cham, you can visit a temple older than the Angkor Wat, but not nearly as crowded and full of beautiful sculptures. Much more tranquil than many tourist-laden districts, Kampong Cham is the perfect place to fully immerse yourself in Cambodian culture, both Khmer and Cham, and take in the gorgeous Cambodian landscape.

Explore the town by strolling along the promenade along the mighty Mekong river, visit some of the local markets, or cross a bamboo bridge rebuilt every year to an island in the middle of the Mekong or go for a hike in the mountains.

HOW VOLUNTEERING IN CAMBODIA ADDS TO YOUR RESUME

Many new graduates do not add their volunteering abroad experience to their resumes. This is a missed opportunity because volunteering abroad helps to build exactly the kind of skills like teamwork and intercultural competency that hiring managers are hoping to find in a great candidate. Volunteering is therefore not only an experience that adds to your personal development, but an activity that will prove itself worthwhile to your professional advancement.

WHAT SKILLS WILL VOLUNTEERING IN CAMBODIA TEACH ME?

Learning to cope in a foreign country is always something that will add to your CV (and your life story). During your time in Cambodia you’ll learn to communicate effectively with persons of all ages, different levels of education, and completely different cultural backgrounds. You’ll also learn to be adaptable and resilient. But, the most important thing you’ll gain is a sense of relatedness to a greater global community, specifically with friends and personal connections in Cambodia.

HOW DO I BOOK?

If you’re excited to make an impact on the community in Cambodia, be sure to check out our volunteer projects kicking off in Kampong Cham in 2018. Our volunteer programs in this rural region are designed to help college students make a difference while being fully immersed in the local Khmer and Cham culture. On the weekends volunteers will be free to explore the capital of Phnom Penh, one two hours away, or take the trip up to Siem Reap where they can explore the famous temple complex of Angkor Wat. Request to join our educationwomen’s empowerment or healthcare programs, depending on your specific interests.
