Seeing New Places and Meeting New Friends

In January this year, I made my decision to look for work abroad. So I started to look for vacancies in childcare in some tourist areas. In my search I came across GVI’s volunteer program. None of the other advertisements stood out to me more then this opportunity. I decided to look more into what GVI do and their programs around the world. The more I read the more sure I felt that this would be an amazing adventure.

GVI offered me the opportunity to see for my own eyes how life is for families and children in a different country, and just how I could help contribute to the support GVI provides for these incredible projects.

From my arrival in Cancun I knew I’d made the right decision with GVI, the staff were so friendly and welcoming. I made friends instantly with the other volunteers and settled in well with some great knowledge of the area, projects and schedules including training and Spanish classes.

Working at the Save the Children Ludoteca was an incredible experience. The children were so friendly. I was worried about communication with the children and staff but I soon realized communication was no problem when it came to working with the children, as there was always a spanish speaking GVI staff on hand to help.

Another part of my experience here was the work we did with the health care project. We assisted with the transition to the new location for the school and preparations for the new site. I got to meet the incredible women who started this project through consistent hard work, no matter the circumstances all for the benefit, care and development of the children. I felt privileged to help with this project in any way possible.

Writing this knowing I’m already in my last few days of my time hear feels unbelievable. The time has flown by and I wish I was staying longer. It’s been an incredible journey and I have learnt, experienced and traveled more then I had ever expected. I feel I’ve grown in so many ways here and learnt so much whilst making some of the most incredible friendships with some very special people.

If there is any advice I can give to any one considering a project with GVI I would say, don’t hesitate, be open minded and most important enjoy.
