Making New Friends in an Island Paradise

So its mid-September, and the final week for Vicky, Franzis and Linda on the Island Conservation Expedition on Curieuse Island. I’m here for 2 more months (3 months in total), so I still have a bit of time to go before I go back to the ‘wonderful’ weather in Scotland. Each week we have to write on a new topic for the blog, so I’m going to get all soppy and talk about making new friends.

My first impressions of the girls when we all arrived in Seychelles a month ago were that they are nice and friendly. It was a while before we got past the polite chit chat and awkwardness and started to treat each other like old buddies.

Each of us have very different personalities and with that there can be arguments and disagreements. Especially when we are all living together for basically 7 days a week, it is not uncommon.

However we’ve had a lot of fun in the past 4 weeks. Linda and I are going to start a Queen tribute band, personally I think it’s going to be a real hit. Franzis is going to be my German pen pal, I hope she doesn’t mind my terrible German. And I’m going invite myself to Vicky’s and force her to watch Disney movies. Can you believe it!? She doesn’t like Disney!

I think that this is one of the best things that GVI offers, the chance of meeting people from all over the world. Of course it’s cool to hang with the Aldabra Giant Tortoises, snorkel with Sea Turtles and spend the day sweating a lot on a Coco de Mer survey (I should add that it’s worth it, there are amazing views when you get up the hill!). These once-in-a-lifetime experiences will leave us all with amazing memories, but friendship is something that lasts as long as you want it to. These guys might be stuck with me for a good few more years. Not sure how they’ll feel about that!

I’ll miss them when they leave, but I have many opportunities to make new friends in the coming months. We’ve got seven new volunteers arriving from Norway, Sweden, England and Austria this weekend, and I’m looking forward to it!
