Luang Prabang: The city that draws you back

Throughout the 6 years that GVI has been in Luang Prabang, hundreds of volunteers and interns have contributed to the broader project goals that aim to help disadvantaged students in Luang Prabang. Many continue to stay in touch, go on to other GVI projects or continue to stay involved through sponsorship of students. However for others, the kindness of the Laos people, the picturesque landscapes, the beautiful culture and the stunning temples that engulf the city are irresistible; they draw you back. There are several GVI Laos Alumni who now live and work in Luang Prabang who continue to make meaningful contributions to the community.

Ashley is 24 years old from Australia. She volunteered with GVI Laos in 2012 and 2013. Having completed her education degree in Australia, she has now returned to Luang Prabang to work as an English language teacher for the doctors and nurses at The Laos Friends Children’s Hospital. She has been here a year.

Sian (second from the left) was an intern with GVI Laos for 6 months in 2013 and she never left! Since then she has been working at an international school in town where she is now the lead teacher.

Dr Michael volunteered with GVI Laos in 2013. After volunteering throughout South East Asia, he returned to Luang Prabang and has been the Medical Director at The Laos Friends Children’s Hospital for the last year.

In addition, many GVI participants go on to take up positions as field staff on our project. Greg (sitting in front) was a GVI ambassador and a GVI volunteer in Laos, Nepal and South Africa. Following this, he joined the field staff team with us in Laos in 2009 and stayed for 5 years!

Similarly Sue completed a TEFL internship with GVI Thailand and a 6 month internship with GVI Laos. In July she began as a field staff member here in Laos. We are thrilled to have her on the team!

These are just a handful of examples of how an experience with GVI can change your life forever…Luang Prabang is without a doubt a city that draws you back.
