My Curieuse

After spending almost three weeks here on Curieuse, I could write a whole book about all the wonderful things that I have been able to experience. The surveys are amazing and you will never see or experience the same thing twice due to the variety that is offered. I have started calling Curieuse my home, because anyone who will visit this place will feel like they’re at home. The base staff are adorable and I feel very lucky that I have such a loving group who are spending their time here with me. Now enough of that, I would like to tell you about the surveys!
My favourite one is definitely the tortoise tickle. This is because you are very close to the animals, which is why I chose to come to the Seychelles. It is an experience everyone should have the chance to be part of, and it fills you with joy and excitement when you find a new tortoise which has not been found and measured this year, or which could even be new to the Island. Another activity that is very interesting is the beach clean, in preparation for turtle nesting season. It is sad to see how much rubbish there is on one beach, however, in helping to pick up the rubbish, you really feel like you are making a difference. You might even find some interesting things during a beach clean, for example a message in a bottle – yes, this actually did happen to me!
A survey which does not belong to one of my favourites is the Coco de Mer. I personally find it very exhausting, but I participated in the survey because I did not want to miss out on it. When you are finally at the top of the mountain and see the view, you forget about the tiring trip upwards. Also standing next to one of the rarest palm trees in the world, which is endemic to the Seychelles, is a big reward for the journey.
Whilst being here on Curieuse I have not only learned the bird species, mangrove species, how to open a coconut and how to measure a tortoise, I have also learned how to push myself to my limits! It is a wonderful experience and I can recommend it to anyone who would like to have memories which are unforgettable. I am looking forward to coming back sometime and maybe I will have the chance to see the impact I had on the conservation of Curieuse island.
