Bring on 2013….

It’s great to be back for another year, it is such a great feeling when you go visit the schools especially when you have been away for a while. I was met by a chorus of “madam shell, madam shell …..” followed by lots of hugs and handshakes. The teacher also greet you with such a warm welcome, it’s like coming home to a very large family. I thank both schools for such a warm welcome.
In November last year standard eight pupils of Olives Rehabilitation Centre undertook their first ever official KCPE examinations.  Passing the KCPE’s is paramount in enabling children to further their education and enhance their future prospects. If the students manage to achieve results within the top 10% of the country they are frequently offered a scholarship to a local high school.  Even children who don’t achieve this will have a greater chance of successfully securing employment, as a KCPE certificate is a key requirement requested by employers upon application.  This includes basic jobs such as shop assistants and hotel catering. Throughout the year Standard Eight have received great support through volunteer donations which have allowed the school to purchase adequate numbers of vital text books which are paramount in aiding their progress.  Not only have the GVI volunteers and staff been dedicated to this, but also the local teachers have shown extreme commitment, dedication and hard work throughout the year.

And if you can, come join us here in Mombasa and get stuck into helping some the most amazing people you are likely to meet!
