My first week in Mexico!

I’ve just completed my first of 24 weeks here in Playa del Carmen, and so far it’s been busy, but memorable. While the heat is definitely going to take some getting used to, the experiences I’ve had so far make it more than worth a little heat! Though most of the week was spent receiving general introductions and orientations to GVI and Playa, I was able to spend three mornings visiting two of the three projects I will be volunteering at; the Ludoteca, and the Special Needs School.

The Ludoteca is similar to a day care, for kids to go to in the mornings or afternoons when they are not in school. I was really impressed by their facilities and supplies; they have so many fun things for the kids to play with and enjoy. We played games with the children, and also got to practice our Spanish while teaching them about “International No Cars Day”, which was on 22nd September.

While the Ludoteca is connected with the international organisation Save the Children, the Special Needs School was started by local mothers looking to improve the quality of life for their children. They personally tailor the therapies to each child, and I was lucky enough to be involved with the dog therapy which all the kids took part in, as well as physical therapy. Because I’m here for such an extended period of time I’m going to be trained in how to help with and preform the physical therapy for some of the kids, which I can’t wait to experience.  I’ve learnt so much in only two days and I am incredibly excited to volunteer there again. Also, we happened to be there for a birthday, so the cake we got was definitely a plus!

So far this has been an amazing adventure, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for me!
