Testimonial from Simon Kettlewell

In addition to the work and the great support from GVI team Nepal, I shared my time with volunteers much younger than me. Despite my ‘advancing years’, they included me in all their activities – white water rafting and paragliding at 2000 metres to name a couple!

Officially I am told at 54 I am ‘mature volunteer’, this is my first visit to Nepal with GVI.  I came for 1 month and worked in all 4 current childcare projects supported by the GVI team. Nepal is a beautiful country with extraordinary contrasts and warm- hearted people. Working with the children in the different projects has been life enriching experience. Many of these children come from families where opportunities are limited and some don’t have families at all. The work can be emotional and in term of limited resources, quite challenging at times. There were moments when I wondered what impact I was having at all.  I quickly realised though, that sometimes all these lovely little people really want is your time. It cost me nothing to give and the result and the rewards were magnificent.  We played games, we sang songs, we ran around and I like to think that we all learnt many new things – including a few Nepali words and the ‘National Anthem’! In addition to the work and the great support from GVI team Nepal, I shared my time with volunteers much younger than me. Despite my ‘advancing years’, they included me in all their activities – white water rafting and paragliding at 2000 metres to name a couple! GVI’s motto is ‘you are the difference’ – I hope I did make a difference for the children I came to work with. They certainly made a lasting difference to me!
