Frequently asked Questions

Before Departure

When can I leave?

GVI Expeditions, projects and courses run all year round. While projects allow you to have a bit more flexibility, expeditions and courses have set arrival and departure dates. Please review each program’s home page for further information or speak with a member of the GVI team to hear about the best times of year, weather, etc. Hide Answer

Is there a maximum or minimum duration required on GVI programs?

This varies depending on the volunteer project/expedition. For most expeditions the minimum stay is five weeks and for most projects, the minimum varies between 1 and 4 weeks. There is no maximum volunteering period though most expeditions have a maximum of 20 weeks. We welcome volunteers to extend their stay on any expedition or project as long as there is availability. This can be arranged through your expedition leader, field coordinator, or through the GVI office. Please give our office a call and we are happy to help you with this! Hide Answer

I’ve been on a GVI expedition before. Can I join another project or expedition?

GVI welcomes all of our former volunteers to join us on future projects and/or expeditions. Former volunteers (non-referral) are eligible for discounts on most of GVI’s programs. Depending on their previous program, this will range from US$245 to US$490 depending upon duration, program, etc. Hide Answer

Will I receive a discount if I join more than one expedition?

Absolutely! If you have already been on a GVI Expedition, you are eligible for a discount on any future GVI expedition. I am from Canada. Can I still apply?

Definitely! Canadians are always encouraged to apply. GVI’s North American office services volunteers from both USA and Canada. Some of our past volunteers have come from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island, among others. For any travel questions or project details, our GVI staff are fully trained to guide you through the reservation process and will help make sure you have all the information you need before heading into the field. Hide Answer

When should apply?

The sooner the better. Expeditions normally fill up 8-12 months in advance. While projects and courses tend to have a bit more availability, it is best to get your application in sooner rather than later to hold your spot. Feel free to give us a call to check on availability and we’re happy to speak with you! Hide Answer

Can my spouse join me or can I bring a friend?

Yes. The more the merrier! Couples and friends are definitely welcome. However, please be aware that we cannot always guarantee private accommodation. That being said, so far we have had four weddings resulting from our expeditions! Hide Answer

Do I need to have had any previous experience?

For most projects however, no previous experience is needed, just a willingness to get involved! Hide Answer

Is there an application process?

Yes, we require all interested volunteers and/or expedition members to complete an application form. This is an important step in securing your safety, enjoyment, and the program’s ultimate success. We only require interviews for expeditions and certain projects. Interviews are conducted over the phone at your convenience. Hide Answer

Can I travel before or after my GVI program?

Definitely! Many volunteers arrive early to do a bit of travelling before joining a GVI expedition/project, while others join a GVI program in the middle of an around the world tour. A GVI expedition / project offers volunteers the chance to slowly adjust before you head off in a new country, and also gives you the chance to meet a group of like-minded travellers and potential travelling companions. GVI is able to help assist you with any insurance policy extensions and flight adjustments if need be. Just let us know how we can help! Hide Answer

What is there a minimum age requirement to join?

The minimum age requirement is 18, and there is no maximum. For families with children under 18 years old, GVI now has a number of family volunteer opportunities which may be of interest. Feel free to give us a call and we are happy to speak with you about the average age of those booked on a certain program or highlight some of our new family volunteering opportunities!
