Help on much needed educational programs in rural tribal communities in Rajasthan

Volunteers joining this short term program will work as teaching assistants on much needed educational projects in tribal communities in Rajasthan, India. Volunteers will be working alongside and supporting other long term GVI volunteers in formal and non-formal schools. All the schools are over-subscribed and underfunded and having volunteers helps make the class sizes more manageable and provides valuable assistance on these worthwhile educational projects. The project usually involves teaching tribal children at formal schools in rural areas in the morning, or teaching street children at informal schools in the evening. Included in the program are basic Hindi lessons during the first week and a cultural workshop (which could be yoga, cookery or dance) in the second week. Some local trips are included, such as a visit to the Monsoon Palace and a trip to the Taj Mahal. Other optional side trips are available for those that wish to explore more of Rajasthan.

The efforts of the volunteers represents a vital contribution to our community, as by means of our projects the volunteers share their energy and time with the people and as a result experience their culture first hand and grow themselves.

What Difference Does This Project Make?

India’s isolated tribal communities face many challenges; the socio-economic progress being witnessed in other parts of India has not yet reached these areas and consequently the cycle of poverty continues. They also face illiteracy and a general lack of education on a wide scale. Child labour and child marriages are common and contribute to these low rates of education. This project aims to focus on assisting the education of future generations as a positive step forward in achieving sustainable community development. This program offers you the chance to help with the development and teaching of these local children, some of which would not have the chance to go to school without the support of volunteers.
