Sarah Durose - Costa Rica Intern
After completing a Masters in Environmental Law and Policy, I worked in various industries around the world and gained a variety of skills and experiences. The opportunity arose for me to do Voluntary conservation after years of saving money and finding the time and so I chose the Costa Rica Expedition. The experience was amazing, however I felt that I needed to see more and be more involved in the projects. Therefore, I took the opportunity to apply for the Scholarship.
The first ten weeks as a Scholar gave me the opportunity to learn more about, not only turtles, but all aspects of the projects and wildlife. Also I was given the responsibility of managing a project and giving me the chance to put forward new ideas. Furthermore, I was able to train and lead groups of like minded people, this was great fun as I had the time to pass on what I had learnt as a volunteer and life experiences in general.
I wish I could stay longer and these next ten weeks have already started as a fantastic phase, seeing new things, especially the hatchlings, and also passing on my knowledge and experience not only to new volunteers, but also to new Interns and Scholars. Furthermore, I still have the opportunity to work on the Tourism Impact Study to implement the new changes, determine whether the changes are relevant and successful and pass on my work to the next person.
Throughout the past six months, I have not only had the opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds, I have also gained a greater understanding and insight into field work in the voluntary and conservation sectors. I now have a clearer idea of what I could do in the future and what areas I could work in with both my Masters and experiences.
