Volunteer Travel in Oceania
If you're coming from the northern hemisphere then arranging your volunteering expedition to the Oceanic continent during the norths winter months will find you enjoying the heat of a southern summer. While in southern Australia and New Zealand this is relatively temperate, in the rest of the region summers can be extremely warm and either very dry or very humid, depending upon where you are.
Many of the nations of Oceania are either small islands or collections of smaller islands, which are covered in dense rainforests and outlined by gorgeous beaches lapped by turquoise waves. Oceania’s tiny island nations tend to exist over volcanic areas and house well-forested, ecologically-rich environments. The indigenous people of these islands have often managed to preserve a great deal about their way of life, such as the Melanesian people of Vanuatu whose Land Diving ceremony (which inspired the modern extreme sport of bungee jumping) still takes place each year. Choosing to volunteer with GVI on Vanuatu would take you to work with the local community to protect the island’s sea turtle populations and preserve their fragile habitat for the future (Land Diving optional!).
