Ecuador Flag

Achieve a recognized qualification while on an GVI expedition

GVI has developed a unique qualification that will allow you to study in whilst living and breathing the rainforests of Ecuador. You can gain this BTEC on a 5 or 10 week expedition through which you will learn the techniques behind supervising biological surveys. The BTEC is a level 3 Advanced Certificate that should leave you confident to plan and manage safe and efficient survey teams in the field.

The course was exactly what I wanted, pushing me to think about what I was doing and why and how the research really worked.

Jane Tibotts

Location

The Yachana Foundation owns and protects 1,800 hectares of (mainly) primary rainforest on lands neighbouring the tiny village of Mondaña, which is located on the Napo River between the cities of Tena and Coca, in the eastern part of Ecuador. On the south side of the river the foundation manages its Yachana Eco-Lodge, an internationally recognised, award-winning ecotourism lodge, and the Yachana High School. GVI’s expedition site is located on the north side of the river and is reached by a combination of bus and motorised canoe.

Field Conditions

The expedition base-camp is located adjacent to the Napo River in a cleared area within the rainforest. It consists of a dormitory-style residence, cooking facilities, showers and toilets; and provides basic conditions for sleeping, eating, working and relaxing. Expedition members will also have an opportunity to spend time in a similar residential setting at the Yachana High School, which is on the opposite side of the river and reached by a short canoe-ride upstream.
