Experience true wilderness training on this intense and physically challenging course

These 28-day and 14-day courses are designed for anyone who wants to leave the modern world behind and get back to basics in Southern Utah’s glorious canyon country. With little more than a knife, a water bottle, a blanket, and a poncho; course participants will explore the desert washes and mountain trails of Utah to have an unparalleled experience in survival training.

GVI has teamed up with one of the leading experts in outdoor survival skills to offer these wilderness training courses, which are designed to cover these basics: desert ecology & travel, fire construction, campsite selection, trail hygiene, shelter location and construction options, water location and purification, nature observation skills, and edible & medicinal plants. The courses are taught in-line with GVI’s philosophy of conservation and minimal impact.

I started my course with certain expectations…it exceeded all of them!

Field Conditions

These courses emphasize the importance of using only renewable, natural resources. Tents, sleeping bags, stoves, backpacks and many other required pieces of outdoor equipment are replaced with their low-tech counterparts: a poncho, a blanket, a campfire. The motto here is ‘Know More, Carry Less’ and you will learn how traditional cultures lived comfortably without all the modern gadgets like watches, radios, mobile phones, etc (which are not allowed on Field Courses). You will also learn and see how back-country travel allows you to have a less intrusive and more harmonious experience.
