GVI have been collecting high quality data within the Baie Ternay Marine Protected Area for almost ten years, including fish and invertebrates’ diversity and density, coral recruitment density and fish surveys as indicators of reef health.

GVI have been collecting high quality data within the Baie Ternay Marine Protected Area for almost ten years, including fish and invertebrates’ diversity and density, coral recruitment density and fish surveys as indicators of reef health. Their work in Curieuse MPA has focused on coco de mer census and monitoring, mangrove monitoring, monitoring of sea turtles, giant tortoise census and monitoring and bird monitoring. These provide data used in management strategies and policies, country reports, regional reports, and help fulfil our requirements under international conventions. GVI also provide much needed help in meeting our education and awareness priorities, through activities carried out with school children and participation in exhibitions for example. GVI are assisting towards achieving the following objectives:

  1. Manage marine Protected Areas effectively: Activities will help to establish appropriate plans for the management of Pas
  2. Ensure climate change adaptation measures are in place to protect marine habitats: Activities help monitor impact of climate change on coral reefs which will help mobilize activities to adapt management of key habitats to climate change
  3. Promote sustainable management of forests: Activities to help focus on sustainable harvesting in coco de mer forests
  4. Prioritise and implement scientific research: Activities will assist to prioritise research areas and develop collabourations with various partners
  5. Develop and implement an effective educational program: Activities will help raise education and awareness amongst various stakeholders and schools
  6. Increase involvement of stakeholders and partners in the management and promotion of protected areas
  7. Enhance networking and partnerships with local, regional and international partners in conservation
