Testimonial from Jillo Katello Wato

I would highly recommend GVI as a partner for any conservation and wildlife management focused organisation and in addition a platform for development of nationals in developing countries.

My name is Jillo Katello Wato, I grew up in one of Kenya’s remote areas called Chalbi Desert in Marsabit and I have been working with the Kenya Wildlife Service for 12 years. I started work in Tsavo as a Ranger for 6 years and left to take on a diploma in Environmental Management. After completion of my Diploma in 2007 I got an opportunity to be re-designated to the research department. I am now working in Coast Conservation in Kisite/Mpunguti Marine Park as a Science Officer. I joined the GVI National Scholarship Programme in 2006 as part of my KWS Training Institute professional attachment and have been working in this position with GVI on a number of projects over the past few years. GVI’s research program has been instrumental in the research-based management efforts of KWS such as the ecological basis for the KWS Shimoni area long term management plan; the protection of marine wildlife by raising awareness; education through tour-operator workshops and primary school level environmental education; and the coordination of primate and marine mammal research along the Kenyan coast. Besides, GVI actively collabourated with KWS to produce dolphin watching code of conduct for dhow operators so as to enhance sustainable tourism. I would highly recommend GVI as a partner for any conservation and wildlife management focused organisation and in addition a platform for development of nationals in developing countries. Currently I hold a Degree in Environmental Science from Moi University, a milestone in my science oriented work. Field exposure while working with different partner research organisations also gave me an upper hand to work in one of the finest marine parks in Kenya.
