Project Life
Animal Sanctuary Volunteer Program in Florida, USA
On a daily basis (with breaks as needed):
| 8am | Join everyone in the main house for breakfast/coffee and discuss the plan for the day. |
| 9am | Begin short projects that require physical exertion before it gets too hot (such as enclosure cleaning, construction, miscellaneous chores). |
| 11am | Feed the farm animals (and exotic animals that eat dry, commercial diets). |
| 12pm | Have lunch with ‘the gang’ (or as desired), clean up the kitchen. |
| 1pm | Prepare monkey food, bat food and other produce for animals then take it around and feed the animals; set bat food and other nocturnal animal food aside for later. |
| 3pm | Animal enrichment and other projects: Monday – Friday a few volunteers will run to town with a staff member to pick up produce and animal care supplies, which is sorted and put away upon returning to the property (this also provides a good opportunity to pick up groceries, etc). |
| 5pm | Swim in the pond, shower, relax, etc. while someone is cooking. |
| 6-7pm | Dinner as a group or as desired (the kitchen and food is available all day), clean up the kitchen. |
| Evening | Deliver food to the few nocturnal animals, socialise around a campfire under the Chiki hut, watch movies in the house or relax, listen to the wolves howl. |
Two to three days a week extra local volunteers are available, allowing everyone more time to plan a large project (new habitat construction, etc)
Participants who are able to stay for longer periods of time (over one month), are more likely to learn the individual animal personalities well enough to be able to assist more closely with the unique issues that arise with various animals. Newer or short-term volunteers may not have the experience to safely assist. Long-term participants will generally assist in supervision and training of new arrivals.
Often your afternoons will be spent working on other animal related projects, either animal enrichment (giving treats, toys, spices, etc. to animals to provide ‘environmental enrichment’ and keep them emotionally content) or other projects such as animal habitat construction and maintenance, grooming horses or building new toys.
