Volunteer Travel to India on community education projects

This Indian tribal community project is run in the host country by an Indian organisation that is operational in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The organisation was founded in early 2004 with a goal to support sustainable human development by promoting volunteering and rural and responsible tourism in India. The organisation tries to benefit both society and the volunteers. The efforts of our volunteers represent a vital contribution to our community as, by helping on the projects, the volunteers share their energy and time with the people, and as a result experience Indian culture first-hand. Volunteering on this project not only gives you an opportunity to give something back to society, but also learn a new language, experience a new culture and live in a completely new way.

The organisation was established with a mission to improve the lives of underprivileged children through education. Though India’s economy is vastly improving and the country has gained remarkable progress recently, many deprived regions still exist. Staff and volunteers are expected to put all their energy, enthusiasm and knowledge into their work so that the organisation can achieve their goals and improve the lives of the children and communities that live in these underprivileged regions.

Volunteers will generally work five days a week, for approximately three to four hours per day. Work schedules will generally be fixed and regular, but changes may occur, especially during the holiday season. Your assistance at the schools not only eases the over-worked teachers but also adds to the educational experience of the children. Class sizes vary in India and sometimes a single teacher has to manage over 70 students. Volunteers can lessen the workload on teachers by teaching or playing with the students, which also provides the children with a different and richer learning experience.

Volunteer’s main responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching English and maths skills
  • Creating a fun and playful environment with games
  • Working with teachers to create low cost materials
  • Monitoring student attendance
  • Monitoring student health and hygiene.

Our project includes a community visit, which gives the volunteers an opportunity to meet the local people residing in tribal areas as well as get closely in touch with the Indian traditions and culture.

The project area comprises of two villages, which each has a school. The school based in the village of Dangiyon ka guda provides educational opportunities for children who usually spend their time labouring. The school situated in Kavita village provides education for the Bheels, a poor and traditional native community from the ancient Arravali Mountains.
