Volunteer Abroad Programs Since 1997

Provide support to learning centers and children’s homes, and journey to Everest base camp

Program Overview

Support the local community and challenge yourself on a trek amidst the world’s tallest mountains. Start off your trip with an orientation in ancient Kathmandu where you will stay with a host family and become immersed in Nepalese life.  Learn about the Nepalese language and traditions, visit ancient Hindu temples and try flavorful local dishes.

Following the home stay, go on an adrenaline packed white water rafting trip before being placed on a childcare or teaching volunteer project in one of several possible locations, leading games and activities that teach English skills and promote a nurturing environment. Make a positive difference in the community before you set off on your mountain adventure to the breathtaking Mount Everest base camp.

Life on the Program

While on your volunteer placement, most of your time will be spent providing critical help to understaffed teachers and care providers by assisting with lesson plans and leading a variety of educational games. Your days can be long and tiring, being with active and attentive children, but the work that you do will be an extremely rewarding experience.

You’ll stay with a host family during both your orientation and work placement. Rooms and bathroom facilities are typically shared and running water and electricity are usually available. Meals are provided, allowing you to experience amazing traditional local meals while with your host family. During your trek you will stay in lodges, called tea houses with meals usually prepared by the lodge owners.

Nepal is a poor country, and without the enthusiastic hard work and support of the volunteers many of these care facilities would not be able to keep running. You’ll be matched with a childcare or teaching project in Nepal that is the best fit for your skills and the current need of a school, orphanage, or care center. You may be needed to teach English, computer skills, sports, or work on community based conservation initiatives.

You will then hike the stunning Himalaya mountains to the Everest base camp.  The journey to the Everest base camp will be challenging but with unparalleled views. Hike past yak herders, mountain villages and picturesque meadows as you ascend to the base camp, pausing at some of the most scenic lookout points in the world.

The personal growth and challenges that results from this trip will be appreciated for all my life to come. The passion and zest for life which had slowly dissolved over the past couple of years was reignited in Bandipur and I have returned with visions of living life to the fullest.

Bandipur is a spectacular location and I felt lucky to be placed there. The students seemed to come to class for the experience of the volunteers and the bonus of learning in a different setting and manner. The Everest Base Camp trek was indescribable and a great way to close out our program. GVI was supportive and assisted me in the experience of a lifetime.
