Teach children sports in a township school near Cape Town

Program Overview

As a volunteer on this project will you be able to help teach children a variety of sports including football, netball, cricket, tennis, rugby and more in some of the impoverished townships that surround the beautiful city of Cape Town.

You will work with teachers, local communities and GVI staff to run sports programs at the schools and provide more personal attention to the students. Without this program or the assistance of volunteers like you, the children would not have the opportunity to take part in such a variety of sports activities and events, due to lack of equipment, skill and supervision.

Life on the Program

When you first arrive, you will go through a training program to learn about life in the townships, local language sayings, South African customs and culture as well coaching techniques and different outdoor games that you may use with the children at the schools.

Each day of the week from around 9am to 4pm you will travel to the school to lead sports and physical education lessons, returning to your comfortable accommodation where you will share a room and bathroom with your fellow volunteers.

On weekends you are free to explore and enjoy all the amazing sights that Cape Town has to offer, such as a cultural tour of the city or safari day-trip.

Program Details

Your work on this project will involve teaching physical education classes, games and activities as well as specific sports to children at a township school.  Each day you will teach several classes, offering a number of different outdoor games, fitness exercises or healthy living workshops.

You will also help coach a different team sport each day. The most popular sports are: netball, soccer, soccer, rugby, track and field, and cricket. On some afternoons you may also attend and assist with matches or tournaments.

In addition to providing more outdoor and sports opportunities for the children, we also hope that our volunteers can help identify talented individuals and help them realize their potential.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience here and have loved all aspects of it – the other volunteers, staff, kids, living conditions and food. This experience has broadened my view of the world and given me a whole new appreciation for my life and the everyday things that I take for granted. I have got a new sense of fulfillment being here and helping the children. I will always have a special place in my heart for all the kids and if my career takes off well I would absolutely donate money to better this school.

This program has been amazing. I could not have asked for a better experience, from the kids at the school to the other volunteers and GVI staff, this experience is something I will never forget. I have made lasting friendships, not only with other volunteers but also with the kids at school. It is one thing to give the kids hope, but it is another to give them a future, and that is what GVI is giving them.
