Program Overview

Enjoy a life-changing experience while living in the foothills of the Peruvian Andes in the beautiful city of Arequipa, as you teach basic education to indigenous children.

As you teach in Spanish to children of four years and up, you will focus on basic education and its reinforcement as a long-term volunteer, providing assistance and continuity that supports the children’s early development. Other members of the community will benefit from your presence as you assist in open classes that are run for both children and adults.

Phoenix, our in-country partners have been operating programs outside of Arequipa since 2006, offering educational opportunities to children that would otherwise go without this essential key to their development.

Life on the Program

Most of your time will be spent in the community from Monday through Friday, teaching the children. This presence will allow you to establish close relationships with your students as you observe their development and successes as a result of your guidance.

While spending your time with these children is certainly rewarding, you are expected to spend time outside of class planning your lessons, and ensuring that they are fun and effective for a positive learning environment.

When you are not in the community you will be based out of Arequipa where your accommodation will be with a local host family in comfortable but basic living conditions. You are welcome to explore the city and spend time with other volunteers on your program.

Program Details

This program addresses some of the most significant problems faced by this community. As the indigenous population originates from a Quechua background, they struggle to establish themselves into Arequipa life, mostly due to the fact that Spanish is not their first language.

The ultimate goal of this program is to establish an educational foundation for the children and other members of the community so they may pursue employment opportunities in the city.

Our in-country partners, Phoenix base all of their programs off of a 25-year cycle, taking the youngest child and providing them with an education that can afford them opportunities to pass on the same experience to their future children.
