Teach English to adults and get TEFL certified in the tropical paradise of Krabi

Program Overview

Earn a TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) certification and lead English classes for local adults while living in the picturesque region of Krabi. You will be based in Ao Luk, a rural town of welcoming people located near tropical beaches, hidden caves and lush rainforests. Learn about Thai culture by learning the Thai language, cooking delicious local meals, and exploring the surrounding paradise.

You will teach evening English classes for adults while receiving TEFL training. Once you’re a certified TEFL instructor, you’ll lead your own classes in local community centers and schools.  These classes give adults the opportunity to learn English and earn a job they’d otherwise not be able to have.

Life on the Program

Your day will start early with a typical breakfast of porridge, pancakes or eggs. While working on achieving your TEFL certification, most of the day will be spent with a TEFL trainer, working on preparing lesson plans and teaching resources and assisting in English classes to adults at the local community center in the evening where once certified, you’ll be assigned to teach your own class.

Accommodation in Ao Luk is provided at a basic GVI base camp with running water and electricity, a fun place to relax and spend time forming friendships with the other volunteers, living in shared dorm rooms and taking turns to prepare meals for the group.

Because of these TEFL classes, entire English courses can be provided to local adults with the course structured into four week blocks before advancing onto the next level after a formal evaluation at the end of each block.

Our goal is to keep these English classes running so that the community’s adults can learn English and earn better jobs. Enthusiastic TEFL certified teachers are needed to keep these classes operating and make a difference in the local community. You’ll gain invaluable teaching experience and encounter a number of exciting challenges, such as creating your own content and lesson plans for class.

Of course GVI Thailand is so much more than just a TEFL course. I came here hoping to experience the “real” Thailand and I have not been disappointed. Ao Luk is a small community in which GVI is well established and respected. Everyone in town is as eager to say “Hello” to me as I am to say “Sawadee Ka” to them! Every other day we take Thai language lessons, which give us a deeper appreciation for our students efforts to learn English. Every night we eat Thai cuisine prepared by a local resident.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last five weeks. They have been quite hectic at times with a combination of daily chores and lesson planning. However, the experience has also been very rewarding. The staff are very helpful and supportive, especially the trainers with vast amounts of patience, encouragement and support throughout the TEFL course.
