Volunteer Abroad Programs Since 1997

Work on important conservation projects in the world famous region of Queensland

Program Overview

Support environmental conservation projects in the diverse and stunning area of North Queensland. This region is the gateway to the Great Barrier reef and the Australian outback and is home to a huge range of animal and plant life.

You’ll work alongside a leading volunteer conservation organization on projects in tropical rainforests, coastlines, and waterways. Projects vary, and could include planting trees, gathering environmental data, or establishing hiking trails. This is a great opportunity to work directly on key conservation issues, make friends from all around the world, and enjoy the splendor of Australia’s natural habitats.

Life on the Program

The majority of your time will be spent outdoors working on important conservation projects. Days often start early and the work can be labor intensive, but it’ll be very rewarding to know you’re contributing to critical environment projects. You’ll have a day or two free each week in which you can explore beautiful nearby sites such as Magnetic Island, which has great beach walks and spectacular views.

Accommodation will vary, and could include tents, lodges, or hostels with everyone pitching in to help with the cooking and cleaning.  Fresh fruit, veggies and meat are used for meals as often as possible, but in the more remote areas you should expect simpler meals.

Project Details

Protect endangered species and world famous environments, such as the Great Barrier Reef’s coastline, by tree planting, removing feral species, constructing protective fencing, weed control or restoration work.

Projects change every one to two weeks, giving you the unique opportunity to experience different environmental focuses. You’ll be placed in teams of 6 – 10 people with a team manager who will provide any needed training and equipment.

Our aim is to help provide enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers to our partner in Australia, a non-profit community-based organization. We want them to have the needed support to continue to design, develop, and implement important conservation projects.

How this program makes a difference:

GVI actively supports our partner in their dedication to involving the community in conservation and natural resource management programs.  We aim to assist our partner by providing volunteers so that it can grow and increase the community’s attention on critical environmental issues.
