Lend a hand in early education centers in Shanghai, China

Program Overview

You won’t be at a loss for things to see and do in Shanghai, China’s most populated and dynamic city.  Shanghai is a vibrant, exciting metropolis rich in history and culture offering endless opportunities for discovery and exploration.

Your work will consist of teaching and mentoring children between the ages of 4-7 in an early education center in Shanghai.  Here you will assist in their development, focusing on basic skills through creative play and other activities.

English is the primary subject volunteers will focus on with the full-time teachers, but time is also spent on other subjects such as music, arts and crafts, dancing and physical education.

Life on the Program

The first week of the program will be spent at an orientation that will cover basic Chinese culture, visiting some of the famous sites in Shanghai and taking elementary-level Mandarin language classes.  Once you finish the orientation you will meet the staff who will show you around the center where you will be working.

The working week lasts from Monday-Friday and primarily lasts throughout the morning.  You will occasionally spend the afternoons planning lessons for the following day.

Provided accommodation is, in most cases a 3-5 bedroom apartment that provides modern amenities such as electricity and running water.

Weekends are reserved for you to explore Shanghai and the surrounding areas.  Be sure not to miss out on the Yu Yuan Gardens, The People’s Square, The Bund and many other hot spots!

Project Details

There are a number of early education centers throughout Shanghai where GVI operates.  The main role of volunteers will be to work with children on their spoken English by using interactive and fun techniques such as playing games, singing, reading western stories and organizing performances.

Typical volunteer work includes:

  • Planning and preparing daily lessons and activities
  • Creating teaching material
  • Teaching English to students
  • Assisting local teachers
  • Keeping records of lessons, curriculum and student progress

The relaxed and enjoyable learning environment is arranged to provide a comfortable and familiar place to encourage the children to improve their English language skills.

How this program makes a difference:

As China opens up to the rest of the world, more opportunities are emerging within tourism, education and development.

By providing students with English language skills, it helps them to prepare for their future in a modern and developed China.
