Volunteer Abroad Programs Since 1997

Assist with critical conservation projects while exploring the treasures of Queensland

Program Overview

It doesn’t get any better than this down under!  Travel along Queensland, the coastline which is home to the Great Barrier Reef and contribute to critical conservation projects before setting off on an adventure-based tour of the region.

Working alongside highly-respected conservation NGOs and getting your feet wet in project focuses such as tropical rainforests and the barrier reef coastline will provide you with an incredible look into Australia, off the beaten path.

Once you’re finished with work, dust yourself off and take an adventure such as white-water rafting to snorkeling.  If this is not enough, try your hand at scuba diving, bungee jumping or sky-diving!

Life on the Program

A warm and welcoming orientation and relaxing first weekend will start off your trip, allowing you to get to know your fellow volunteers before diving into the project.  Your project will entail anything from endangered species protection to trail blazing to environmental monitoring.  Your focus will all depend on the needs of the project, so it is wise to be prepared for physical work and all weather conditions.

During your second phase of the expedition you will explore Queensland by foot – hiking and trekking through the rainforest – by swimming and white water rafting.  During the days you have off you can opt to pay a bit extra for activities such as bungee jumping or sky diving.

Accommodation will be varied throughout the expedition.  You will stay in anything from hostels to rainforest lodges to tents.  Food will be just as varied, but you should expect basic meals, especially on remote project locations.

GVI has partnered with a local not-for-profit community organization dedicated to involving the surrounding communities in hands-on conservation projects.

The main aim of the program is to develop long-term partnerships that represent strong ties between community involvement and critical environmental issues.  Your role will be the bridge between these communities and their environment, connecting them in a positive way.

Australia is a popular destination, with over 2,500 overseas volunteers visiting every year to assist in similar programs that promote professional growth and better understanding of the environmental issues and what must be done to remedy them.
