For the last 9 weeks I`ve been helping out at Escuelita a special needs school. I interact with the students using various therapies and also help the teachers with the activities. After volunteering with them for a while now, they asked me if I would like to join them for their annual Christmas party, where staff, students and family all attend.
We made various Christmas decorations throughout the build up to the party, I was involved with making the Christmas tree which was made of egg boxes painted green, this took quite a while to make but everyone was very happy with the final outcome! The students also made small Christmas trees out of corks and decorated them to give to all the guests at the party.
Myself and 2 other volunteers were invited to a student’s house for the annual Christmas party. We played various games including rubbing your face in flour trying to find the prize without using your hands, obviously I picked the tray without a prize so everyone found that pretty funny! The students also participated in other games including eating a donut off a string with only using your mouth, even the dog had a go! Also the children all took part in hitting the piñata which is a Mexican tradition at Christmas parties.
Towards the end of the party the students were all given presents by Santa Claus, and the smiles on their faces were priceless. Throughout the party I felt glad to have had the chance to be a part of Escuelita and meeting such lovely people, I’m going to miss them so much when I leave in January.
