Location

The expedition takes you to one of the more remote and breathtaking regions of the world. Patagonia is a region of South America spanning both Chile and Argentina. The expedition will move to different locations within the area dependent upon project focus and weather conditions. During the winter the land is a challenging extension to the Antarctic and is a snowy and cold environment. The summer sees Patagonia transformed into beautiful grasslands, hills and mountains with snow capped peaks and glaciers. The majority of each expedition (10 weeks) will be spent in mobile (tented) accommodation with very basic facilities engaging and managing groups of international volunteers of about 15 persons. The expedition office is located in Bariloche where the Country Director and the Science and Logistics Manager are based and field staff spend rest days.

Description

Live out in the field with the Expedition Members and field staff for the majority of the expedition, coordinating the day to day activities of the expedition. Being a strong leader with good organizational skills to cope with fast changing conditions and expedition plans. This is a very social position, where having the skills to manage groups of people in sometimes very challenging conditions is a must.

Salary

160 US$/week, progressing per expedition

Responsibilities

  • Run the expedition base, manage day to day activities of all biological projects and research activities
  • Manage field staff in co-ordination with the Patagonia Science and Logistics Manager
  • Provide leadership and training in biological sciences, conservation and outdoor skills to Expedition Members
  • Manage Expedition Members, including maintaining health and safety standards with a sound basis in GVI’s Health and Safety procedures
  • Complete science reports based on all activities of the expedition
  • Assist in all areas of the expedition as needed.

Qualifications Required

  • MSc or BSc in a biological science or equivalent experience is essential as well as proven field experience, preferably in cold mountain environments
  • Excellent group management skills with a minimum of 2 years work experience
  • Fluent English & strong Spanish language skills
  • Wilderness navigation, map reading proficiency
  • Strong report writing skills
  • minimum 5 years driving experience
  • International driving license, manual shift driving experience
  • Current CPR/First Aid
  • Cold weather outdoor experience

Qualifications Desired

  • Proven leadership skills in an outdoor setting
  • Wilderness First Aid or First Responder qualification
  • Mountain Leader skills
  • EFR Instructor
  • 4WD driving experience
